Building the future forestry workforce

With the UK Government’s ambitious target to increase tree and woodland cover in England to 16.5% by 2050, the demand for skilled professionals in forestry has never been greater. A Forestry Sector Skills Plan (2025–2035) has been published that sets out the current barriers and challenges, presenting a comprehensive long-term agenda for change. This plan has been developed by a steering team made up of ten forestry sector leaders including the Institute’s Executive Director, Louise Simpson.

A call to action for government, industry, and education providers to collaborate and invest in the sector’s future, the plan has been divided into five priority themes:

  1. Promotion and development of forestry careers and career pathways
Raising awareness of the wide range of roles in forestry – from forest management to timber engineering – is essential. The plan calls for better outreach to schools, career changers, and underrepresented groups.
  2. Increasing provision of training and education within the forestry sector
There is an urgent need to increase the capacity of training providers and ensure that education aligns with industry needs. This includes expanding apprenticeships and upskilling opportunities.
  3. Increasing equality, diversity and inclusion
A more diverse workforce brings broader perspectives and better outcomes. The plan emphasises inclusive recruitment and support for people from all backgrounds.
  4. Improving standards
Encouraging continuing professional development and raising the profile of forestry as a respected career path are central to this theme. Professional accreditation and qualifications are key tools.
  5. Improving forestry workforce data
Better data on skills gaps, labour trends and training needs will help the sector make informed decisions and plan for the future.

Commenting on the publication of this new plan, the Institute’s Senior Education & Outreach Officer, Dr Rob Hawkins, said:

“The Forestry Sector Skills Plan is set to revolutionise skills development in the forestry sector. By promoting diverse career opportunities, expanding training and education, enhancing equality and inclusion, improving standards, and refining workforce data collection, we can build a well-trained, diverse and adaptable workforce. This plan will ensure the forestry sector meets future demands and contributes to sustainable growth.”
