We are delighted to announce that the Institute’s acclaimed National Study Tour will return in October 2024, focussing on the management of the public forest estate in Northern Ireland to deliver public goods in partnership with public and private sector organisations.
This year’s Study Tour will take place on 22 and 23 October with members visiting two forests in Counties Down and Armagh, within the newly designated Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark.
On the first day, members will visit Castlewellan Forest, a long established Forest Park with national arboretum of global importance, one of the world’s largest permanent hedge mazes and recreational provision including walking, cycling and caravanning activities in County Down which is contributing significantly to the tourism offering in Northern Ireland.
The second day will focus on the issues around the transformation of Slieve Gullion Forest, a largely commercial conifer forest within the Geopark, to stimulate economic and social development and deliver a wide range of public goods, in partnership with local government and private sector partners.
Discussions on both days will revolve around the contribution sustainable forest management makes to the delivery of public goods in Northern Ireland. This includes delivering Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) priorities and wider NI Executive priorities; partnership working with the local council to deliver local government objectives; private sector involvement in utilising forestry to deliver public goods, and the impact of the above on forestry planning and operational forest management.
Stay tuned for more information – bookings will open soon.
