The Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) is delighted to announce the recipients of its prestigious Best Student Awards, for those graduating with forestry or arboriculture-related degrees from a number of UK Higher Education Institutes.
Students are nominated by course tutors and lecturers and the awards are not automatically given to those with the top marks but often celebrate the achievements of those students who have worked the hardest, shown the most commitment, the best attitude, the greatest improvement or demonstrated excellence throughout their studies.
The ICF is the Royal Chartered body for foresters and arboriculturists in the UK and regulates the standards of entry, offers professional qualifications, and promotes expertise in the tree and woodland management professions. The Institute strives to recognise and support excellence in forestry and arboriculture, not only from its chartered members but from those working towards a career in these professions, as these awards demonstrate.
Shireen Chambers FICFor, ICF’s Executive Director, commented, “ICF is delighted with this year’s crop of ‘top students’ receiving the ICF Best Student award. At a time when forestry and arboriculture professionals are needed more than ever it’s good to know that competition for these top prizes is still very much alive. Many of these students will go on to become the professionals of the future, either in research or management, and we hope that their success will encourage others to follow.”
The awards were made at each student’s graduation and were presented by ICF chartered members – leading professionals in forestry and arboriculture. Winners each received a cheque and certificate and, of course, the good wishes of the Institute in their future endeavours. It was encouraging to note that two of the nominated students were existing ICF student members, and both have already been ‘snapped up’ by major employers in the sector.
The five winners were:
Rosemary Erin Haskell – University of Edinburgh
Sephera Burton – University of Aberdeen
Lochlan Dulson – University of Cumbria
Ruthe Davies – Myerscough College
Jospeh White – Bangor University
A further award will be made to a student at the Scottish School of Forestry in Inverness later in the year.
