The Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) has delivered a number of distinguished student awards over the summer months, building valuable connections between the industry and the UK’s rising forestry and arboricultural talent. The 2017 ICF Student Awards were presented at graduations across the UK during June and July, by ICF representatives, recognising academic achievement in ICF-accredited higher education courses.
Winners of the influential award received a one-year ICF Associate membership subscription – a valuable platform for starting your career, offering the opportunity to develop professionally and expand your network of forestry and arboricultural peers. Associate membership is the first step to chartered status, and seen as necessary or desirable by many leading employers.
The 2017 ICF Student Award winners include:
- James Edward Broom, BSc Forest Management, National School of Forestry (University of Cumbria)
- Ryan Charnock, BSc (Hons) Arboriculture and Urban Forestry, Myerscough College
- Samantha Howard, BSc Forestry, Bangor University
- Lewis Rumsey, FdSc Forestry, Plumpton College
- Rebecca Sinclair, BSc Forestry, University of Aberdeen
- Sam Thomas Hobson, BSc Arboriculture, Pershore College
James Edward Broom was unavailable to receive his award at the University of Cumbria’s graduation, as he is currently on his work placement with Algonquin Forestry Authority in Canada, for winning the prestigious Prince of Wales Leadership Award – helping nurture future forest leaders. Another important young professionals’ platform that ICF supports – this award is a UK to Canada partnership initiative between the Institute of Chartered Foresters, The Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada and The Prince of Wales’ Duchy of Cornwall.
ICF Executive Director Shireen Chambers FICFor congratulated the winners, highlighting the importance of supporting young professionals’ initiatives within the sector:

A further ICF Student Award will be distributed at Harper Adams University in the autumn.
