Are you an experienced and supportive manager who has a sound knowledge of forestry? Do you have a wider interest in managing land to adapt to climate change, enhance biodiversity and facilitate recreation? We are looking for a senior manager who will provide leadership on projects and decision making, motivate teams, coordinate business planning and investment, and encourage collaboration to create sustainable forests of the future.
Our South Region is a very busy place, and this is a new post, reflecting the pace and scale of our land management operations. The post holder will help us make the most of opportunities across all the land we manage. You will need to develop an understanding of all areas of activity – from renewables and silviculture to peatland restoration and mountain biking – and work with teams to deliver our objectives effectively.
If you would like to be engaged with the future direction for public forests and land across South Scotland, then this could be the job for you!
What you will do
As Deputy Regional Manager, you have four key areas of responsibility.
You will:
- Provide leadership, support and mentoring for senior staff and managers, particularly those working in Planning, Programming, Renewables, Environment and Visitor Services
- Promoting a ‘safety first’ culture and an inclusive working environment
- Lead on coordinating five year business planning across this busy Region, ensuring that the Senior team is well sighted on the resource implications of future opportunities, investments and constraints
- Take an overall function lead on Strategic Projects and improvement activities within the Region. Provide a focus for developing how to efficiently coordinate and resource sustainable management of the forest and land in South Region
- Support the Regional Manager, acting as their representative and deputy to engage with stakeholders when necessary, and coordinating input to key projects of regional and national significance.
You will directly manage six members of staff across planning, project management, strategic programming and renewables. You will also work with the Operations Manager to oversee coordination of the delivery of South Region’s programmes, aiming over time to deliver across all our objectives while ensuring that the forest and wider land holding is managed sustainably.
You’ll need to lead and motivate; show initiative and be proactive; develop a strategic understanding of all aspects of FLS business in South Region; and coordinate and manage resources to effectively deliver across the range of planning, environment, renewables and recreation outputs for the long term.
Candidates should be chartered or working towards chartered status.
