Job description

An interesting, unusual and responsible position for a Head Forester on a well-known family-owned estate in North Kent with a substantial and diverse commercial coppice operation and a long history of excellent woodland management.

We are looking for an experienced Head Forester to look after the estate’s woodlands – predominantly chestnut coppice with some established and recently planted hardwoods alongside the running of the harvesting operations needed for the estate’s timber processing operation.

The Job responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation of a new long term management plan, felling licences, maintenance of FSC and other certifications, H&S and record keeping
  • Maintenance and improvement of the estate’s woodlands
  • Harvesting and sale of hardwoods
  • Management of a team of ten or more contractors and responsibility of ensuring supply of timber into the estate’s chestnut fencing business
  • Liaising with other woodland owners and purchasing standing timber and managing harvesting external to the estate
  • Sourcing and managing supplies into the estate’s heating grade woodchip business
  • Management of a chestnut seed orchard

The successful candidate will be able to combine a commercial focus with an interest in sustainable woodland management, conservation and the natural world and will ideally have some experience of coppice management.

Excellent salary and benefits – company vehicle and good accommodation by arrangement if required.

Please apply by sending your CV and a covering letter to recruitment@torryhill.co.uk.
