This is an important leadership role in Forest Research (FR). The postholder will head the Silviculture and Wood Properties Science Group, leading the development and implementation of a scientific vision for the Group, and combining this with their own applied research. They will encourage innovation, ensure that the Group delivers high-quality applied research, and will build scientific expertise and profile, including their own. They will contribute to the delivery of organisational strategy through developing and implementing a business plan for the Group. They will be a member of FR’s wider leadership team, working collaboratively to shape our scientific work and culture.
The postholder will lead staff and team development for the Group and will plan and oversee the management of resources. They will work with Group members to shape key and deliver research priorities and will ensure high quality of work and effective project management and budgeting. They will proactively seek opportunities to develop the Group’s research portfolio and funding and pursue their own and collaborative research. The postholder will represent the Group within FR and in some external fora and will also contribute to development of FR scientific strategy and outputs, working with the Chief Scientist’s team, Heads of Centre and other Science Group Leads (SGLs) within and across Centres. As part of their specific research portfolio, they will oversee and coordinate work on short rotation forestry between science groups funded from core and external funds. The balance of scientific research and leadership and management duties will be regularly reviewed.
