Job description

ABOUT US

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. We want to see a world where trees and woods thrive for people and nature. The Trust engages and inspires people to make their difference tackling the nature and climate crisis helping protect, restore and create our vital woods and trees.

THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Woodland Manager to join the southeast regional estate team and to manage a diverse portfolio of woodlands across Mid Kent in line with the Trusts land management policies and standards. All our woods are Forest Stewardship Council certified, and for many supporters, our woodland estate is the local window to the work of the Woodland Trust where we demonstrate what we can achieve to manage woods and trees for people and nature.

As a Woodland Site Manager, you will lead on a 5-year site management planning cycle, associated planning and management of woodland operations and estate maintenance across Mid Kent. This will vary from operations such as management of established secondary woodland sites and to sensitive management of irreplaceable ancient woodlands, as well as ensuring our woodlands are safe and welcoming for visitors, volunteers and contractors. You will be a local advocate of the work of the Woodland Trust, demonstrating woodland management for nature and people, whilst engaging volunteers and neighbouring landowners.

THE CANDIDATE

With previous experience in land-based management in the forestry, woodland management or nature conservation sector, you’ll have a strong track record of managing sites for nature and people particularly woodlands, budget and contract management, and Health and Safety management.

You will have great communication skills, be commercially aware and able to work with a range of stakeholders. A full driving licence is essential, along with the ability to undertake travel across the portfolio area and wider SE region for team meetings. Very occasional overnight stays will be required and you’ll be expected to live within a reasonable travel distance of the portfolio area. Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or another relevant professional body is desirable.
