Job description

Scottish Forestry is looking for a Technical Officer to join our team based in either Dumfries or Selkirk.

You’ll need to have a good grasp of complex case work involving grants and regulations, as part of your job will be to help and mentor our woodland and Assistant Woodland Officers.

You’ll also help us to deliver our ambitious targets in your own right and by guiding the Conservancy team.

About the team

South Scotland Conservancy is one of 5 Conservancies within Scottish Forestry (SF). Our Conservancy oversees, promotes and regulates a wide range of forest and woodland from highly productive conifer investment forests, estate woodlands and farm woodland schemes to smaller scale community woodlands.

The UK Forest Standard sits at the heart of woodland advice and guidance with the conservancy team working within a wide range and often competing Land designations, classifications and priorities. This leads to an interesting and varied spectrum of casework for the conservancy team who are also engaged in initiatives for social, community and educational benefits and additionally in terms of tree health and resilience.

We work across East and South Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and Scottish Borders Local authority areas with the main Conservancy office located in Dumfries and an area office in Selkirk. Travel between the two offices is a requirement of the role.

What you will do

You will work with our Ops Managers to identify and lead on complex case work involving both the forestry grant scheme and our regulations functions including screening projects against the Forestry EIA Regulations. You’ll also help to mentor and support team members helping them to advance their knowledge base through guidance and tuition, at the direction of the operations manager.

Candidates should be Chartered or working towards Chartered status.

If this role is of interest, then please apply via our website.

Closing date 23:59 on 3 December 2023.
