Shortlist announced for Professional Forester of the Year 2026

The Institute of Chartered Foresters is delighted to announce the three shortlisted candidates for Professional Forester of the Year 2026, the prestigious award that recognises outstanding service to the profession and the sector.

This award recognises the contributions made by Chartered Arboriculturists or Chartered Foresters to the betterment of forestry on a community, regional, national or international level. Professional Forester of the Year is awarded for a specific project, or range of activities, undertaken by a Chartered member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters within the last three years.

The shortlist for Professional Forester of the Year 2026 is:

  • Tom Coates MICFor
    Area Supply Manager, James Jones & Sons
  • Catherine Nuttgens MICFor
    Director, Nuttgens Urban Forestry
  • Charles Robinson FICFor
    Managing Director, Robinson Forestry

Louise Simpson, Executive Director of the Institute, commented:

My congratulations go to everyone who has been shortlisted for this year’s award. The standard of entries was again exceptionally high, and our judges faced a real challenge in narrowing the field. Recognising and celebrating the dedication and accomplishments of our professional arboriculturists and foresters is incredibly important to our sector, and I am eager to see who will ultimately be announced as the winner.

The winner of Professional Forester of the Year 2026 will be announced at the Confor Dinner & Awards in Edinburgh on 11 March 2026.

Tom Coates MICFor
Tom stands out as an enthusiastic and inspiring professional, whose rapid career progression and passion for outreach have helped engage others in sustainable forestry practices. In his role with Scotland’s largest sawmill group, Tom promotes responsible woodland management and champions collaboration across the sector. His ability to motivate and connect with people reflects a strong commitment to advancing forestry science and practice.

 

Catherine Nuttgens MICFor
Catherine is celebrated as an innovative communicator and advocate for change. Her work redefines public engagement with trees and green spaces, balancing wellbeing, nature, and climate priorities. Catherine’s influence extends into media, academia, and community initiatives where she champions diversity and creativity. Her efforts to raise awareness of the sector’s vital role in society exemplify leadership and vision for the future of forestry.

 

Charles Robinson FICFor

Charles Robinson FICFor, Managing Director of Robinson Forestry Ltd, is recognised for his outstanding achievements as both a forester and business leader, and for his significant contributions to the wider forestry sector. He inspires and supports his team to realise their potential, fostering a culture of trust, respect, and continuous improvement. He has played a pivotal role in the industry as a conference speaker, Member Network Chair, PME Assessor, and as a representative on the UKFS Review Panel. Part of the Institute’s 2024 Emerging Leader Programme and awarded Fellowship of the ICF in 2025, he is held in high esteem for his leadership.
