ICF Awards

The Institute of Chartered Foresters distributes, endorses and sponsors a series of awards throughout the year, promoting education and research and recognising exceptional contributions to both the Institute and the sector.

Student Award

Each year, the Institute presents a prestigious student award to each of the top students in the universities and colleges with ICF-accredited forestry and arboriculture courses. This is an important accolade at the beginning of a young person’s professional career, and winners benefit from recognition amongst ICF membership.

Professional Forester of the Year Award

Launched in 2022, the Professional Forester of the Year Award recognises Chartered members for their outstanding service to the profession of forestry and for furthering the principles of the Institute of Chartered Foresters.

The Institute's Medal

The Institute’s Medal is our highest award and is given for a commitment to professional excellence in arboriculture and forestry. Both Institute members and non-members are eligible for this award. Previous winners include Ian Ross OBE FICFor and Dr Joan Webber.

The President's Award

The President’s Award recognises outstanding services to the Institute, either at regional or national level. Awards may be proposed by the Institute’s President and approved and determined by Council. The winner(s) of this award is normally announced at the following Annual General Meeting of the Institute.

Honorary Fellowship

Honorary Fellowship of the Institute is reserved for those who may not be eligible for professional membership of the Institute, but who have made a notable contribution to the advancement of arboricultural / forestry knowledge or for any other reason consistent with the objectives of the Institute. Previous recipients of this accolade include Sir Harry Studholme, The Right Reverend James Jones and Kevin McCloud.

The Silvicultural Prize

The Percy Stubbs, John Bolton King and Edward Garfitt Prize for Silviculture (The Silvicultural Prize) is awarded annually to the author(s) of a paper published in the Institute’s international journal of forest research, Forestry. The winning paper is that which, in the opinion of the Editors, best meets the criteria set down by the anonymous donor of the Prize Fund.

The Hugh Miller Award for Excellence

Named after Professor Hugh Miller OBE FRSE FICFor (1939-2019), this is awarded where, in the opinion of the assessors, a Professional Membership Entry (PME) applicant has shown exceptional ability. Professor Miller taught forestry at the University of Aberdeen between 1984-2004, is a Past-President of the Institute (1994-1996), and former Chair of the Institute’s Examinations Board. He is credited with designing the current PME process we still, by and large, use today.

ICF Journal Awards

Forestry is the Institute’s international journal of forest research, published by Oxford University Press on our behalf. Every year the Institute issues a series of awards for outstanding papers and reviews from the journal.

The Prince Of Wales Forest Leadership Award

The Prince of Wales Forest Leadership Award is a partnership initiative between ICF, the Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF-IFC) and the Duchy of Cornwall, which offers selected UK students the opportunity to take part in a work placement exchange with Canada.
