Level 4 Forestry Works Manager

A Level 4 Forestry Works Manager (FWM) qualification demonstrates an individual has the essential expertise to oversee and execute complex forestry operations safely, sustainably and responsibly. Through this programme, candidates are recognised for having the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to plan, coordinate, and manage a wide range of activities, from tree felling and timber harvesting to habitat restoration and infrastructure maintenance, ensuring both operational success and environmental stewardship, including:

Commission and supervise forestry projects and on-site works in diverse settings, including public estates, private woodlands, and commercial forests.

Implement and enforce health, safety and welfare standards to protect workers, contractors, visitors, and the public, following current FISA and environmental guidelines.

Manage operational logistics (from timber extraction and forwarding to coordinating with hauliers and integrating with public road systems) while ensuring environmental good practice rules and guidelines are followed.

Balance multiple site uses such as recreation, biodiversity conservation, and production forestry in line with UK Forestry Standard best practices.

Routes to achieving the Level 4 FWM qualification

The Experienced Worker route

This is an assessment route for people who are already experienced Forestry Works Managers and would like to achieve a qualification that recognises their skills and experience. You need to be at least 21 years old and have at least five years of demonstrable experience of working in a FWM role.

The Apprenticeship route

This route is for people with employer support who are working in forestry and wish to develop their career to become recognised as a Forestry Works Manager. This comes with training and assessment. If you do not need the full apprenticeship, but need to top up your skills in some areas, training will be available.

Think you're ready to apply via the Experienced Worker route?

You must complete and submit an Open Awards Skills Scan (eligibility checklist) to confirm you meet the requirements for this route. If eligible, you will then be able to proceed to compile and submit your full portfolio of evidence via the Silvestor platform. Once submitted, portfolios will be processed and forwarded for assessment by Open Awards.

Progress to Technical membership (TechICFor)

Successful completion of the Level 4 Forestry Works Manager qualification provides a recognised route towards Technical membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters.

  • Use the post-nominals TechICFor
  • Access professional development opportunities
  • Join the professional body for forestry and arboriculture
  • Build a pathway towards higher grades of membership and chartered status
